(Vaginal Health & Menopause Care)
Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus.
A thin, lighted camera called a hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This allows your provider to view the uterine cavity on a screen and accurately diagnose or treat underlying conditions.
Why hysteroscopy is performed
Hysteroscopy is most commonly recommended to evaluate or treat:
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Prolonged periods
- Irregular cycles
- Bleeding between periods
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- Uterine polyps or fibroids
- Thickened uterine lining
- Retained tissue or structural abnormalities
During the procedure, a sample of the uterine lining (biopsy) can be taken to evaluate for precancerous or cancerous changes when clinically indicated.
Key benefits
- Accurate, direct visualization of the uterus
- Minimally invasive, no external incisions
- Often completed in the office setting
- Helps guide immediate treatment decisions
Colposcopy
Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows a detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a specialized magnifying device called a colposcope.
This instrument provides a highly magnified view, allowing your provider to identify abnormal cells that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
When colposcopy is recommended
Colposcopy is typically performed when:
- A Pap test shows abnormal results
- HPV testing is positive for high-risk strains
- There are visible changes or concerns involving the cervix, vagina, or vulva
If necessary, small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken during the procedure for further evaluation.
Key benefits
- Early detection of cervical precancer and cancer
- Precise evaluation of abnormal Pap or HPV results
- Quick, in-office procedure with minimal discomfort
