What are the WPSI Recommendations for Women?
The Women's Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI) has developed recommendations to ensure comprehensive well-woman care. These recommendations are a collaborative effort between primary care providers, OBGYNs, and other specialists as needed.
Preventive care recommendations are individualized based on your age, medical history, risk factors, and personal health goals.
Well-Woman Preventive Visits:
We recommend visiting your clinician for a well-woman checkup at least once a year. These visits are tailored to address health issues that matter most to you. Concerns such as new symptoms, infections, or problem-focused issues may require a separate visit.
Contraception:
If you are not planning to get pregnant, our clinicians can discuss suitable birth control options with you. Timing is crucial in making this decision.
Counseling for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
For sexually active individuals, our clinicians provide guidance on preventing STIs, ensuring your sexual health.
Screening for Anxiety
If you experience feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety, our clinicians can discuss anxiety management and available resources.
Immunizations
Recommended vaccines based on age and risk factors may be reviewed and updated during your visit.
Preventing Obesity in Midlife Women
If you are between 40–60 years old, our clinicians can advise you on maintaining a healthy weight through proper nutrition and physical activity.
Screening for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
Your annual checkup is an opportunity to discuss your HIV risk. Testing may be advised, and our clinicians will provide information to help you stay informed.
Screening for Breast Cancer
Your risk of breast cancer is a vital consideration. Consult with our clinicians to determine when and how often breast cancer screening is appropriate for you.
Screening for Cervical Cancer:
Depending on your age and risk factors, cervical cancer screening may be recommended. Our clinicians can provide guidance on the frequency and timing of screenings.
Screening for Interpersonal and Domestic Violence
Healthy and safe relationships are crucial. Talk to our clinicians about available resources and support for interpersonal and domestic violence.
Screening for Urinary Incontinence
If you experience involuntary loss of urine, our clinicians can assess its impact on your daily life and discuss potential solutions.
